About

Since its founding in 1944, the Department of Architecture in NCKU has cultivated many talented people specializing in construction projects and planning design for the country and society. It has been very active in participating and contributing to the social transformation in different eras in Taiwan.

However, Taiwan and the world have almost encountered with the same rapid changes. Factors such as “urbanization”, “resource shortage” and “climate change” are leading us to lose the experience of daily life that we learned from the “classic”. Our lifestyle is probably changing in a rapid way that beyond the “evolution”. Taking the most important topic, “climate change”, in the past two decades for example, the development of this interdisciplinary issue has completely changed the connotation and values of the past architectural academic and planning design profession. The new areas and technological development of architectural and interdisciplinary research it brought out, has become the foundation for the establishment of "sustainable design" in the field of architectural academic and specialties.

This kind of catastrophe caused by the unknowing or uncontrollable changes has made us notice the difficulties and opportunities faced by architectural education. Therefore, "integration" is an opportunity to break through the current predicament of architectural education. In the existing aesthetic and humanistic-based architectural education system, architectural design is the integration platform for all professional knowledge. Only by integrating the knowledge of humanities, design, engineering, digital technology and other expertise all together, can help us to face the 21st century's "non-classical" environmental challenge and develop sufficient resilience. Forming an interdisciplinary integration capability, introducing a friendly digital technology oriented education environment, and continuing to improve the research in various fields of construction engineering technology, to construct an innovative architectural design that adapts to the living environment of human beings, will be the advantages of the NCKU Department of Architecture and also the goals of sustainable efforts.

In addition to faithfully reflecting the development of the NCKU Department of Architecture in the past two years, this annual review book has also presented the results of resource integration through the research achievements of teachers, the learning outcomes of students and the development of departmental affairs. It shows that the Department of Architecture in NCKU will continue to play a greater role in social leadership and mission in the future development of Taiwanese architecture.
