Architectural Structure Group

The architectural structure group became independent from the engineering group in 1989. It aims at advanced training for the integration of engineering knowledge and design thinking and research on structural engineering topics such as seismic design and evaluation. The group accepts about 8 students to the Masters and 1-2 to the PhD course annually.

Lectures and research supervision in the group are provided by Professors George C. Yao, Yi-Hsuan Tu, Yu-Lin Chung and Adjunct Professor Chun-Sen Chen, in collaboration with the department of civil engineering. The main research aspects include:

1. Seismic assessment and retrofit for architectural equipment and non-structural elements
2. Seismic assessment and retrofit for RC and confined masonry buildings
3. Seismic assessment and retrofit for steel and timber structures
4. Innovative structural system and structure-integrated design

 

Research projects in this group are focused on solving seismic issues for the buildings in Taiwan by means of in-situ investigation, large-scale loading tests, and detailed analysis. The recent projects are as follows:

The offices and laboratories of our group are located in the Architecture research building, including a large-scale structure testing facility capable of static and dynamic loading experiments. The testing facility assists not only the in-house research and teaching projects but also the cooperation with industry to improve the seismic technology in practice. In the future, the collaboration with the Tainan Laboratory of National Center for Research on Earthquake Engineering (NCREE) newly built in the Guiren campus of NCKU will further extend the available research resource.
